Should You Choose a Premade Book Cover?

Want to make the big bucks as an author? Then you need a quality cover for your book. Unfortunately, good cover designers are expensive (as they should be), so it may be beyond your budget to hire one just now. There’s a solution . . . premade book covers!

At Ready, Write, Covers, we’re a little biased toward premade book covers, but we’re also authors. We know exactly how hard it can be to develop a good cover with a limited budget. That’s why we created this site.

Here, you’ll find plenty of great covers for various genres, with more always coming. That being said, premade book covers have pros and cons.

Pros of a Premade Book Cover

When it comes to the reasons you should pick a book cover that has been premade, there are quite a few! Let’s take a look.

They’re More Cost Efficient

You can get an excellent cover for far less than if you pay a graphic designer. Premade book covers tend to be quite affordable, so you can spend your money on the things that count, like publicity and editing.

There Are Plenty to Choose From

Not that we want to send you away, but there are dozens of premade book cover sites to choose from. They give you a vast range of covers, so you’ll find something you like. Also, if you don’t find what you need, we will let you suggest a topic or theme for the future.

They’re Customizable

Depending on the premade book cover site, you will have some options for editing. Most sites let you send in your requests, and for a small fee, they’ll change the image. They also change the title and author name, etc., to meet your needs. As you’ll see in a minute, this can also be a con.

They Match the Genre

You’ll be surprised to find covers that are precisely what you need. That’s because we know your audience and know the current trends. The premade book covers are bound to fit the tropes we all know and love.

They Offer Variety

If you’re trying to make your book covers, you’ll notice that stock photo places don’t have much in the way of diversity. Need two women on a romance cover? Good luck. Writing a reverse harem? How about an action book with POC as the heroes? There’s very little on the stock photo sites, and you must know where to look. Premade covers tend to offer more variety.

Cons of a Premade Book Cover

Of course, not everything is perfect when it comes to premade covers. You’ll find there are some downsides, too.

They’re Not Specific to Your Book

The biggest downside is that you will not find a cover that is exactly tailored to your book. In most cases, this isn’t a big deal, but if you want something that precisely reflects your characters and themes, you may need to hire a graphic artist.

You’re Limited in Changes

Depending on the site, you may need to pay a lot to have changes made. Also, once you’ve got the book, if you change the name a year down the road, you usually can’t go back and change it. We offer an alternative to that . . . your book template is in Canva, so you can adjust and tweak the text whenever you want, even if it’s ten years from now. You can even change your fonts if you prefer.

Someone Might Have a Very Similar Cover

Sometimes, artists create a series of similar covers with the idea that they could be a series. However, you might only need one, and someone else buys the others. This can be quite a dilemma! At Ready, Write, Covers, we offer packages where the covers for the series are sold together, so this can’t happen.

Should You Buy Premade Book Covers?

If you’re starting your writing career and don’t have the budget for a cover artist, a premade book cover can be a great option. There’s no law against changing your covers later when you make it big!
